With the Thornton Hibs Park waterlogged the tie was switched to Penicuik and the visitors found
themselves a goal down in the 7th minute when, following two successive corners to Penicuik,
ROBERTSON headed home at the back post. In the 10th minute a Thornton free kick was driven in
from the edge of the box but deflected away for a corner. Three minutes later, an indirect free kick
just outside the six-yard box was awarded to Thornton when Bald was deemed to have gathered up
a Meikle pass back. Fortunately for Penicuik the defensive wall stood firm and the danger was
cleared. In the 25th minute a Brigain pass to KILLIN saw him cut in to the edge of the box and slam
home an unstoppable left foot strike. Six minutes later a great diagonal pass by Harvey picked out
Brigain, but his first touch let him down and the ball was cleared for a throw in. In the 33rd minute
after great work by Killin, his reverse pass set up BARR who rounded keeper Smith to slot home.
Shortly afterwards a stramash in the middle of the park held up play for five minutes whilst referee
Stokoe sorted out the problem and booked four players, two from each side. Right on half time, the
visitors were awarded a free kick on the corner of the box and CARSTAIRS fired the ball over Bald
into the far top cornet of the net.
Half Time: Penicuik 3 Thornton 1
In the 55th minute, Penicuik were awarded a penalty when Barr was pulled down and Drummond
received a second caution for his troubles. However, Brigain saw his spot kick well saved by Smith.
In 61st minute, a real let off for Penicuik when they were caught out by a quick throw in, but the strike
on goal hit the post and was cleared. In Penicuik’s next attack, Harvey was set free one on one with
Smith, but his attempted lob was not high enough and Smith saved comfortably. Six minutes later,
another penalty was awarded to Penicuik, this time when Harvey was brought down just as he was
about to shoot. Shields was fortunate only to receive a yellow card for then offence. Harvey took the
penalty but shot past the post. From the goal kick, Thornton broke up the park and BURNS slotted
home to pull the score back to 3-2. One minute later, a pinpoint cross by Killin picked out HARVEY
who turned his marker and curled the ball past Smith into the bottom corner of the net. In the 75th
minute, an opportunist goal by WALKER saw him turn quickly and shoot on goal, and despite Smith
getting a hand to the ball he couldn’t prevent it from crossing the line. Four minutes later a great
cross by Robertson picked out Harvey, but his header crashed back off the bar, and under pressure
he hit the rebound over the bar. In the 86th minute, Walker chested the ball into the path of Barr, but
his effort sailed over the bar. Then in the 89th minute, HARVEY broke away from the Thornton
defence, rounded keeper Smith to stroke the ball home for his second and Penicuik’s sixth goal.
