Penicuik 3 Montrose 1
The game started
briskly with Montrose threatening in the 2nd minute when Watson shot over the bar with only the keeper to beat.
In their next attack a strike by Rae from the corner of the box hit the side netting. In Penicuik’s first real attack
in the 12th minute, HARVEY showed his strength to turn his marker and slam
the ball home from a tight angle. In the 20th minute, after good work by Cole, Walker saw his twenty-five yard
shot beat keeper McLeod, but scrape past his right hand post. Three minutes later Montrose won a free kick on the edge of
the Penicuik box, but the strike was block by the defensive wall for a corner. From the corner, Graham rose above the Penicuik
defence only to see his header cleared off the line by Coleman.
Minutes later, Bald
did well to save a shot that came at him through a ruck of players. In the 34th minute, following an excellent
move by Penicuik, Cole sent over a cross into the penalty box where Harvey was inches away from heading home. Then it was
Harvey’s turn to create a chance, but Walker’s effort went narrowly wide of the target. In the 43rd
minute, a superb tackle by Lynch deep in his own half saw him win the ball and lay it off to Walker. His first time chip over
the Montrose defence picked out HARVEY who coolly lobbed the advancing McLeod to score.
Half Time: Penicuik 2 Montrose 0
In the opening minute
of the second half, Montrose were unlucky not to score when the ball hit the post and the rebound was struck into the side
netting. At the other end keeper McLeod did well to snatch a dangerous Gay cross off the head of Cole. In the 58th
minute keeper McLeod blocked a powerful Walker shot and then he tipped Kelly’s strike from the rebound past the post
for a corner. From the corner, the ball was only partially cleared and returned into the penalty box where COLEMAN turned quickly to rifle the ball into the net. In the 70th minute a deep cross was headed toward goal
by Kerrigan but Bald got his fingertips to the ball to turn it over the bar.
Three minutes later, following
a neat passing move, KERRIGAN finished it off when he picked out the top corner of
the net for a fine goal. Montrose had their tails up and were piling on the pressure but their finishing let them down. In
the 70th minute Watson should have done better, but blasted well wide of the target. In a rare Penicuik attack,
Harvey came close with a shot that whistled over the bar. Right on full time, Montrose were again unlucky when the woodwork
came to Penicuik’s rescue after a header came back off the post and cleared. One minute later, a quickly take Montrose
free kick was headed wide of goal by Kerrigan
