Penicuik were controlling the game, playing some top class football and Somerville again close after fine work by McCrory-Irving. Penicuik took a fully deserved lead in the 10th minute when McCrory-Irving got past Willut and crossed the ball. SOMERVILLE smashed the ball past Waters into the roof of the net. In the 20th minute, a high ball into the Penicuik penalty box was partially cleared, headed back in, knocked towards goal by McCloy but straight into the arms of Watt. Five minutes later another McCrory-Irving cross had the home defence in a panic and McKie hooked the ball over his own crossbar. From the corner, Forbes just failed to direct his header on target. In their next attack, Penicuik broke from defence and Somerville’s strike was tipped over the bar by Waters. Then a cleverly worked Penicuik corner saw Watson’ shot flash inches over the crossbar. In the 38th and 40th minutes Irvine changed the outcome of the game scoring goals by BOYD and WARDROPE to give Meadow the lead before half time. Half Time: Irvine 2 Penicuik 1 Ten minutes into the half and Meadow should have increased their lead but keeper Watt pulled off a brilliant save to deny Boyd. Immediately afterwards, keeper Watt was well placed to save a Meadow free kick. In the 62nd minute, a free kick was awarded to Penicuik 25 yards out and Baptie curled the ball past the defensive wall only crash back off the base of the upright. Then in the 65th minute, BOYD dispossessed Thomson and ran the length of the Penicuik half to slot the ball past Watt. One minute later, a long ball from midfield picked out Boyd in a suspiciously offside position. He passed the ball to McCLOY who had the easy task of slotting the ball home. In the 68th minute, Penicuik pulled a goal back when LAMB shot home from 22 yards, beating keeper Waters all ends up. 71 minutes, and a Baptie free kick again beat the defensive wall but Waters saved well. Four minutes later, another long ball picked out Boyd, again looking marginally offside, set up McCLOY who again finished with aplomb. In the 82nd minute, substitute McMurdo had only keeper Waters to beat, but Waters denied the striker. Just before full time, a powerful low strike by Reid crashed off the post, ran along the goal line and was cleared. Full Time: Irvine 5 Penicuik 2
