On a miserable wet night in Penicuik the points were shared against Musselburgh Athletic in a repeat of last season’s
opening home fixture. Penicuik started brightly and in the 11th minute, a free kick to Penicuik was headed by McCallum
but keeper Mancini was well placed to save. However, three minutes later Scott’s defence splitting pass set up
SOMERVILLE for his first goal of the new season. In the 20th minute, a long range strike by Inglis had Mancini beaten
but the ball went just wide of the keeper’s right hand post. At the other end, Bejaoui beat away a powerful shot only for
McCulloch to gather the rebound, but his effort flew high over the bar. In the 26th minute, a Scott free kick was cleared to
the edge of the box from where Barr volleyed first time only to see his strike deflected away for a corner kick. Immediately
afterwards, a strike by Lough went narrowly wide of the target. One minute later, a McCulloch header from a corner kick
went straight into the arms of Bejaoui. Just before half time a testing cross from the left wing by Musselburgh was missed
by everyone and bounced six inches past the base of the post.
Half time: Penicuik 1 Musselburgh 0
Musselburgh came out for the second half with all guns firing and Penicuik were pinned back in their own half and a
Murphy strike was well saved by Bejaoui. The pressure continued on Penicuik, but the defence proved solid and in the
64th minute a counter attack by Penicuik saw Somerville’s strike beat the keeper but went inches wide of the right hand
post. At the other end Thomson had a chance, but his shot went well wide of goal. In the 75th minute there was panic in
the Musselburgh defence when a Jancyzk corner saw four shots desperately blocked and Barr’s final effort sail high over
the crossbar. Three minutes later the game was all square when Thomson got round the back of the Penicuik defence to
set up FORSTER who calmly slotted home for Musselburgh. Penicuik had a final chance in the 82nd minute when a cross
by Scott to the back post was headed into the side netting by Lough. In the end a draw was probably a fair result.
Final Score: Penicuik 1 Musselburgh 1
