A bright and breezy day welcomed Penicuik to Laing Park on the
back of three straight wins with 18 goals for and only 2 against a
home side buoyed by a 4-1 East of Scotland Cup win over Kinnoull
last time out, but still looking to break their duck in the league. With
skipper McCallum in for the injured Somerville the only change to the
side that slammed nine past Livingston the visitors were looking to
continue their good run and clock up another away league win.
The home side started brightly and Smith had the first effort on goal
as he fired wide past Bald’s right hand upright with four minutes
gone. The visitors responded immediately as a quick passing move down the right saw McCallum set up Montgomery but he
fired into the side netting. Lough then set Barr free only to see his effort deflected for a corner before Hume’s header from the
corner was headed off the line. The home side headed up the pitch and after the Penicuik defence failed to clear the danger
Smith blasted wide from the edge of the box.
It was the visitors who gained the upper hand in the 14th minute as LOUGH latched onto a loose ball 18 yards out and swiftly
curled a shot past the helpless Robbie into the corner of the net. A minute later LOUGH added a second as Hume set the
galloping Forbes free down the right and his cross was met by the striker who slotted home. The two goals in two minutes
became three in three when McCALLUM picked up Lough’s flick on, knocked it on but saw it deflected back into his path by a
red shirted defender and he was clinical in his finish from eight yards out. It took the home side a minute to pull a goal back as
SMITH finished from close range from an Urquhart cross making it four goals in four minutes and a 3-1 lead for the visitors with
only 17 minutes gone! The visitors tried to get back into the game but failed to cause any real problems for Bald in the Penicuik
goal and just after the half hour mark the game burst into life again as firstly Young saw his header bring out a great save from
Robbie before with 33 minutes gone HUME fired a fierce drive from 22 yards into the corner of Robbie’s net to make it 4-1. In
their next attack the visitors made it five as SPROULE pounced on Montgomery cross into the box and turned and volleyed
home after 35 minutes. The home side were shell shocked and Sproule and Lough both had great efforts before half time as
Penicuik looked to add the their lead.
HT – Carnoustie Panmure 1 Penicuik Athletic 5
The travelling support were expectant at the start of the second half after the first half scoring exploits and the home sides
record of conceding goals heavily in the second half but the hosts were determined to ensure there was no repeat of the first
half scoreline. It was the 55th minute before the first real scoring chance of the half came and it was spurned by the home side
as Bald was forced into making a rare save from McCabe. The visitors responded and a great run by Montgomery saw his cross
turned behind by a Panmure defender.
