With joint leaders Bo’ness and Kelty Hearts on Cup duty a Penicuik
side showing three enforced changes from the side who took a point at
Camelon were looking to take all three points against bottom side
Tayport to go clear at the top of the Super League for the first time
ever. The home side got off to the perfect start within 90 seconds when
McCallum fed the breaking SOMERVILLE down the left and he cut
inside and from 18 yards out finished with aplomb past the helpless
Jellema. The visitors responded and two minutes later from a long free
kick Anderson beat Bejaoui but his header went wide of the upright.
Cuikie were next on the attack with only six minutes on the clock as
Young intercepted a Kay pass, and fed Gay down the right and his ball into the box was turned behind by Anderson for a corner with
Somerville lurking. Into the 13th minute and McCallum and Lough combined for McCallum to deliver a dangerous cross across the six
yard box but the onrushing Somerville failed to make contact. Five minutes later Somerville won possession on the half way line and fed
McCallum whose well weighted pass found Lough in space 25 yards out and his shot on the turn went narrowly past Jellema’s left hand
post. Tayport attacked down the left and Robertson’s cross into the box was cleared by Ross’s diving header.
Devlin and Jancyzk were breaking up Tayport possession in the middle of the park and in 25 minutes they combined to set up Somerville
on the edge of the box but he shot weakly into the keeper’s arms. On the half hour Lough’s raking cross field pass found Somerville
racing into space and he drove into the box only to see his shot well saved by the Port keeper. On 38 minutes a rampaging Ross run
down the left saw his cross break to Somerville who fired wildly over form the edge of the box. The visitors enjoyed their best spell of the
half as half time approached and after Robertson fired over from 20 yards; Ovenstone saw his header from a corner kick sail wide.
HT Penicuik 1 Tayport 0
Tayport kicked off the second half looking to get back into the game and had early opportunities as first Rollo saw his ball into the box
just fall out of the reach of Ovenstone, before Suttie shot wildly over from the edge of the box. The game went quiet with neither side
making headway and it was past the 70th minute when the visitors had an opportunity to equalise as substitute Sutherland broke free
down the right but saw his shot go across goal past the outstretched Bejaoui but past the far post. The Penicuik response was immediate
and with 72 minutes gone McCALLUM was dragged down by Ovenstone 22 yards out and dusted himself down and fired home a
sublime free kick past the diving Jellema. Five minutes later Sutherland forced Bejaoui into his first save of the game as the big keeper
blocked his shot at the near post as he drove in on goal and three minutes later produced almost a carbon copy save from Bejaoui. With
five minutes remaining it was save number three from Bejaoui as he defied Sutherland yet again at the front post as the striker bore down
on goal as the visitors enjoyed their best spell of the match.
Into the last minute Ross found McCallum running in on goal but his effort was well saved by Jellema, before Devlin released Mitchell
who raced away from the Tayport defence but his ball across goal was put past the post by the sliding Montgomery. It was the visitors
who finished on the attack as Suttie failed to trouble Bejaoui as he fired over from 20 yards out but the home side went top of the league
for the first time ever
