The visitors were first to threaten in the opening minute with a corner that was headed narrowly over the bar by Morrison. Five minutes
later, Sauchie came close again when a deep cross by Flood was headed down to Millar, but trialist keeper Coyle got down well to save.
Then a Morgan cross into the box over the Penicuik defence picked out Flood but his effort was easily gathered by Coyle. Immediately
afterwards, keeper Coyle was back in action punching clear amongst a ruck of players. The visitors went ahead in the 11th minute when
Comrie set up MORRISON who outpaced the Penicuik defence to slam the ball home. Penicuik then attacked up the right wing and
Young crossed the ball into the six yard box from where Somerville’s first time volley crashed back off the far post and was cleared.
Minutes later, Lough came close, but his effort was comfortably saved by Harkness. In Penicuik’s next attack, McCallum had a chance
but he sliced his shot wide of the goal. In the 20th minute, a well worked move set up Jancyzk, but he dragged his shot wide of the target.
Penicuik were piling on the pressure, and should have scored two minutes later, but Lough’s shot went inches past the post. However,
despite that pressure, Sauchie doubled their lead in the 33rd minute when TULLY headed home from a corner kick. Penicuik battled
back in the 39th minute when McCALLUM volleyed home a Lough cross at the front post. Sauchie should have scored minutes before
half time when a great run and cut back by Millar was struck inches wide of the target.
Half time: Penicuik 1 Sauchie 2
It would be interesting to know what manager Meikle said in the dressing room at half time, but it most definitely did the trick because
Penicuik upped the pace of their game and put Sauchie on the back foot. In the 48th minute, keeper Harkness pulled off an instinctive
one handed save to deny McCallum and then was relieved to see a powerful strike by Gay whistle inches over the bar. In the 62nd
minute, Harkness had to look lively to hold a Gay cross. One minute later, a quick break by Sauchie saw Morrison one on one with
keeper Coyle, but his shot came back off the base of the post. At the other end, a pinpoint pass by substitute Thomson picked out
Somerville whose first touch was a delight, but his shot hit the side netting. In the 67th minute, an altercation between White and Duffin
saw white booked and Duffin sent off for a second yellow card. Four minutes later and the score was level when TAPPING, under
pressure from Somerville and Lough, had the misfortune to turn a dangerous Gay cross into his own net. Then in the 81st minute, a
Devlin chip over the Sauchie defence appeared to be going out for a goal kick, but Somerville had other ideas and knocked the ball to the
front post where McCALLUM pounced to slip the ball under keeper Harkness for the winner.
Final Score: Penicuik 3 Sauchie 2
