On a bright sunny day the Penicuik team were accompanied onto the park by this seasons’ PAYFC mascots for the final
Super League match of the season looking for a win before Wednesday’s Fife & Lothians Cup Final. The match was
barely a minute old when McIlravey’s 30 yard strike was parried by Bejaoui and he could only watch in despair as Young’s
attempted clearance was blocked by the inrushing BROWN and spun into the net to put the visitors ahead. Ten minutes
later a Carnoustie corner was fired goalbound by Smith but Bejaoui cleared and then collected the second effort. The
home side were getting frustrated and not showing any real attacking threat and it was the visitors who almost capitalised
on a home attack breaking down with 27 minutes on the clock as Smith collected a pass mid way in the home half and
then cut into the box but fired over from eight yards. Somerville replaced the injured Lough on the half hour but again it
was the visitors who threatened as Conway’s vicious shot from distance was parried to safety by Bejaoui. McCallum had
the first real effort for the home side in the 37th minute as he latched on to a McDermott pass but was thwarted by
Allardyce.
Half Time: Penicuik Athletic 0 Carnoustie Panmure 1
The home side kicked off the second half and after trialist16 replaced the injured Lister, McCALLUM put Cuikie level
heading over keeper Allardyce from a Jancyzk free kick. The home side had a foothold in the game now and on the hour
mark after an exchange of passes Somerville stung the hands of the keeper who parried his shot to safety. However
SOMERVILLE wasn’t to be denied and in the 64th minute a Jancyzk free kick was headed into his path by McCallum and
the striker volleyed home from 18 yards. The visitors still posed a threat on the break but Cuikie added a third in the 77th
minute as a Gay cross was out in to the back of the net at the second attempt by BARR. McIlravey had a great chance e
for the visitors in the 81st minute bur Bejaoui saved well and then Brown and a minute later substitute McCabe shot
weakly into the keeper’s hands. With three minutes remaining the ball broke to Trialist16 for the home side and his shot
from 25 yards was brilliantly saved by Allarydce. Going into the last minute Barr had a shot saved and then a Gay cross
was headed off the cross bar by Trialist17 with the keeper beaten. A good second half from the home side putting them in
better fettle for Wednesday’s final against Bonnyrigg at Olivebank.
