Penicuik travelled to Victoria Park for this 2nd round Scottish Junior Cup tie against Brechin Victoria. The first opportunity of the game fell
to Penicuik when they were awarded a free kick just outside the box, and although McCallum’s strike beat the defensive wall, keeper
Robbie was well placed to save comfortably. In the 17th minute, Barr set up Ross, but his strike went well wide of the target. Two minutes
later Bejaoui was brought into action to block a Strachan strike. On the half our, a mistake by White allowed Lewis to break free, but he
failed to take advantage of the slip and the danger was cleared. In the 42nd minute, a pinpoint cross from the right wing by Ross picked
out Barr, but his header went straight to keeper Robbie. Then at the other end Bejaoui had to be alert to deny Strachan at the far side of
the penalty box.
Half time: Brechin 0 Penicuik 0
Two minutes into the half and Somerville was set free one on one with keeper Robbie. Somerville slipped the ball past the keeper only to
see it hit the outside of the upright and away for a goal kick. In the 56th minute, Brechin came close with a free kick that went a foot wide
of the post. Five minutes later, substitute Montgomery was denied by an excellent save by Robbie. In the 63rd minute, Brechin
pressurised the Penicuik defence and the ball was cleared to the edge of the box from where KING fairly blasted the ball into the top
corner of the net. Immediately afterwards, a Penicuik attack ended with a Ross strike that was well wide of the goal. Penicuik upped the
pace of their game and following consecutive corner kicks, keeper Robbie pulled off a tremendous one handed save to deny Somerville.
Minutes later, the Brechin penalty box was under siege and only a goal line clearance stopped Penicuik equalising. However, in the 76th
minute, a speculative cross into the penalty box by ROSS deceived everyone and finished up in the back of the net. Ten minutes later,
Penicuik got the winner when substitute LOUGH’s long range strike from the right wing hit the back of the net for his first goal for the
club. The home side had a final chance to equalise but King’s free kick from just outside the penalty box sailed high over the bar.
Penicuik should have added a third in injury time, but substitute Mitchell’s first touch of the ball beat keeper Robbie, but went inches over
the bar.
Final score: Brechin Victoria 1 Penicuik 2
