Penicuik entertained Lowland League Whitehill Welfare in a floodlit friendly under the Penicuik Park
lights as manager Meikle looked to give some his youngsters a run-out. Cuikie had been 4-1
winners at Rosewell in pre-season but went one better this time with a convincing 5-2 win with Sean
Patterson netting four and Dean Knight grabbing the other.
The home side started well and it was PATTERSON who opened the scoring in ten minutes as he
picked up a Ryan Gay pass, beat his marker and shot past Young into the bottom left corner.
Patterson turned provider three minutes later as he played in KNIGHT who went past Thom before
chipping the keeper from 16 yards to make it 2-0. The visitors got one back in the 17th minutes as
a short free kick caught the Cuikie defence out and NOON headed past Hill and the ball went in off
the post. It was all square two minutes later when Kidd found Somerville racing into the box as Hill
blocked his shot. The ball appeared to strike Somerville's hand but he back heeled the ball into the
path of MARTIN who stroked the ball into the empty net. The home side were awarded a penalty in
the 27th minute as a long ball from McDermott found Knight who was fouled by Bruce and ref Millar
pointed to the spot. PATTERSON stepped up and confidently dispatched the ball past Young to
restore Cuikie's lead.
HT Penicuik Athletic 3 Whitehill Welfare 2
As they had done at Bathgate on Saturday Penicuik came out with all guns blazing and were
rewarded in 54 minutes as a great passing move ended with PATTERSON slotting the ball home for
his hat-trick. PATTERSON added his fourth two minutes later as he picked up a Harris pass on the
edge of the box, beat Bruce and fired past Young into the far corner. Both sides had further chances
with the home side sharp on the break as the Rosewell side tried to up the tempo and get back into
the game but there was no further scoring. An excellent work out and convincing win against a side
who recently took Stirling Albion to a replay and went out to a late goal in the Scottish Cup.
