In a game dominated by atrocious weather and underfoot conditions, the home side started brightly
and created three early chances in this 2nd round Fife & Lothians cup tie but poor finishing and
good goalkeeping kept the score sheet blank. At the other end, Patterson got round the back of the
Oakley defence only to see his cut back booted clear. Then Hill had to rush out to dive at the feet of
the Oakley striker when he was sent clear. In the tenth minute, consecutive corners to Penicuik
caused panic in the home defence, but Patterson just failed to get the required touch on the ball.
Immediately afterwards, Patterson danced past his marker to send in a low cross that the keeper
gathered at the second attempt. Oakley should have taken the lead one minute later, but with
keeper Hill caught out Meikle, at full stretch, blocked the net bound strike. Minutes later, a great
driving run by Knight saw his strike flash inches wide of the far post. In the 26th minute, a wind
assisted Oakley corner kick deceived everyone, hit the crossbar and went over for a goal kick.
However Penicuik took the lead in the 31st minute when PATTERSON slotted home from a corner
kick. Six minutes later, Penicuik doubled their lead when McCALLUM hooked home a Gay free
kick. Just before half time, Oakley had a chance but the strike on goal was dragged wide of the
upright.
Half Time: Oakley 0 Penicuik 2
Two minutes into the half and a neat interchange between Patterson and Harris carved open the
Oakley defence, but Patterson's shot missed the target by inches. In the 61st minute, Harris drove
through the middle of the Oakley defence and despite being upended, slipped the ball to Patterson
whose shot flew narrowly over the bar. Four minutes later, a Gay free kick from thirty yards beat the
defensive wall but the keeper got down well to turn the ball round the post for a corner kick. In the
71st minute Penicuik again came close, but were denied by the Oakley keeper. In Penicuik's next
attack, substitute Killin was set free but blasted the ball high and wide of then target. Then Ross got
in on the act but his shot was blocked by the outstretched hand of the keeper and booted clear.
Oakley pulled a goal back in the 81st minute when the ball was cleared to the edge of the box from
where it was promptly blasted into the back of the net. Two minutes later a powerful shot by Gay
beat the Oakley keeper but crashed back off the base of the post. The rebound fell again to Gay but
his effort to curl it into the top corner went inches past the post. Penicuik controlled the remainder of
the game and ran out worthy winners and into the draw for the third round of the cup.
