Penicuik travelled to Blairfield Park to play Oakley United in our third League match of the new season and came
away with all three points. Penicuik started at a high tempo and in the opening minute, a free kick to Penicuik was
played to Killin in the box. He flicked the ball over his marker to McCallum who saw Burgess in goal pull off a
great one handed reflex save, tipping the ball over the bar. Shortly afterwards a long kick out by the trialist keeper
was headed on by McCallum to Ross who drove across the box, but his strike flew high over the bar. Minutes
later the same player sent in a dangerous cross that McDermott headed narrowly over the crossbar. Penicuik
took the lead in the 18th minute when McPartlin laid the ball off to McCallum who in turn crossed the ball to
KILLIN to stroke home. Straight from the restart, Oakley broke up the left and the ball was crossed into the box,
but the strike by Scarborough went straight into the keeper’s arms. In the 33rdminute, a pile driver of a shot by
McPartlin crashed back off the upright and Killin was only inches away from knocking home the return ball. At the
other end the woodwork came to Penicuik’s rescue when Allan’s strike hit the crossbar and cleared. Penicuik
doubled their lead one minute later when McPartlin set up McCALLUM who slotted the ball into the bottom
corner of the net past the advancing Burgess. In the 41st minute, Oakley pulled a goal back when DAIR shot
from thirty yards into the keeper’s bottom left hand corner of the goal
Half Time: Oakley 1 Penicuik 2
Two minutes into the half and Killin lost possession in his own half and a cross deep to the back post picked out
Scarborough who completely missed his header when any kind of contact would have seen the ball hit the back
of the net. In the 54th minute with Oakley upping the pace of their game, a long high ball caught out the Penicuik
defence, but Penicuik’s trialist keeper stood big and blocked Scarborough’s effort and the danger was cleared.
Oakley were now pushing Penicuik back into defence launching long high balls into the box testing the resolve of
the Penicuik back four. In a rare Penicuik attack, a Ross volley flew high over the crossbar. In the 75th minute,
dealt Oakley a killer blow with a quick break from defence. Killin crossed the ball from the left win and
McCALLUM rose to bullet home a header giving Burgess no chance. However, all credit to Oakley who
reapplied the pressure and three minutes later, following three consecutive corners, SCARBOROUGH knocked
the ball home from close range. In the 81st minute, Oakley were fortunate not to be reduced to ten men when
Killin was cinically chopped down from behind as he drove in on goal with only Burgess to beat. In the 86th
minute, a corner to Oakley was headed on to the back post from where Allan tried a first time volley, but his effort
high, wide and not so handsome. With the home side bombarding Penicuik with long high balls, the visitors held
out strongly even in the extra five minutes of time added on.
