Bottom of the league Montrose Roselea were the visitors to Penicuik Park looking for their first points of the season
and they shocked Penicuik inside the first minute when a Taylor high ball caught out the Penicuik defence allowing
WATSON to lob the ball over the advancing Bejaoui. In the 3rd minute, Ross broke up the right for Penicuik but
McCallum was inches away from making contact with the ball and keeper McLeod gathered comfortably. Minutes
later, McCallum headed down a throw in to Knight, but his shot flew high over the bar. Penicuik's pressure finally paid
off the 12th minute when McCallum flicked the ball on to PATTERSON who fairly rifled the ball into the back of the
net from just inside the penalty box. Immediately afterwards, Montrose came close with a Watson strike that went
narrowly past the junction of the crossbar and post. As the game swung from end to end, Lister saw his twenty five
yard strike whistle inches past McLeod's right hand post. In the 16th minute, a powerful shot by Patterson flashed
past the upright. Two minutes later, a great driving run down the left wing by Knight saw keeper McLeod smother the
cross at the front post at the second attempt. In the 20th minute, some determined possession by Penicuik saw
McCallum set up McPARTLIN who took full advantage and slotted the ball past McLeod to give the home side the
lead. Then a let off for Penicuik when, again a high ball caught out the defence, Reid latched on to the ball, got round
keeper Bejaoui, but his shot hit the post. The rebound was stuck goalwards, but this time Bejaoui blocked the shot
and the ball was booted clear. In the 32nd minute, Penicuik were again caught out by the high ball over the defence
and Reid was one on one with Bejaoui, but dragged his shot well wide of the target. In a mirror image of the previous
high ball, another sent Reid free with only Bejaoui to beat, but this time the keeper stood big and blocked the striker's
effort. In the 40th minute, some desperate defending saw two shots blocked in the Montrose penalty area and a third
strike by Barr went straight to McLeod. Just before half time, Penicuik created two great chances, but failed to convert
both.
Half Time: Penicuik 2 Montrose 1
Two minutes into the half and Lister showed some delightful skills setting up Barr, but his side footed strike sailed
over the crossbar. Penicuik were piling on the pressure and in the 52nd minute increased their lead when a superb
run by Ross outpaced the defence. His cross from the goal line was met by KNIGHT who volleyed the ball past
McLeod into the roof of the net. Four minutes later, a corner to Penicuik caught the Montrose defence napping when it
was taken short and immediately crossed into the box. McCallum got his toe to the ball but his effort trundled inches
past the post with keeper McLeod looking on anxiously. In the 58th minute, a mistake by Kerr allowed Brand a great
opportunity, but his shot flew high over the bar. Minutes later, McDermott charged up the left wing sending over a
cross to the back post where Patterson at full stretch slid in, but couldn't direct his shot on target. In Penicuik's next
attack, keeper McLeod pulled off a top drawer, one handed save, to tip Knight's net bound shot over the bar. In the
81st minute, a rare Montrose attack saw Rae blast wide of the goal. Penicuik continued to control the game and in the
end ran out comfortable winners. Montrose will reflect on the chances they had in the first half, and if converted there
would have been a different result at the end of the day.
Final Score: Penicuik3 Montrose 1
