Then in the 14th minute, McDermott set MONTGOMERY free with a great pass over the top of the home defence, and this time he made no mistake slotting the ball home. Two minutes later, another excellent McDermott pass set up McCulloch, but he dragged his shot just wide of the goal. However, Penicuik’s pressure told again in the 18th minute when, following a corner kick, McCULLOCH doubled Penicuik’s lead. Two minutes later, a penetrating move down the right by Penicuik saw Ross curl in a low cross to the front post. McPARTLIN dived in to glance a header past Stewart in goal. Immediately afterwards, McCulloch had another chance after good work by Montgomery, but he sliced shot well wide of the target. In the 27th minute, a testing Kirriemuir free kick into the six yard box was missed by two Kirrie players and went harmlessly past for a goal kick. Ten minutes later, a McCulloch pass set Montgomery free, but keeper Stewart rushed out to smother the ball at Montgomery’s feet. Just before half time, Kirrie’s defence failed to clear at a corner kick but were relieved to see Ross blast the ball high over the bar. Half Time: Kirriemuir 0 Penicuik 3 Kirriemuir were the first to threaten after the restart, but Bejaoui was well place to save a header from a free kick. Immediately afterwards, the home side were reduced to ten men when John Farquharson was red carded for a head butt on Lister. In the 57th minute, a neat passing move between Smith and Lunan forced Bejaoui to rush from goal and nip the ball off the toe of Smith. At the other end, a first time cross by McPartlin to the back post saw McCulloch, at full stretch, get a toe to the ball but his effort went past the post. In the 67th minute, keeper Stewart came to the rescue for the home side denying McCulloch with an excellent save. Immediately afterwards, Stewart was back in action again, saving a Lister strike. In the 70th minute, Penicuik substitutes Robertson and Dickson combined well to set up a chance in the penalty box, but Stewart beat away a Ross shot and McCulloch’s overhead kick came back off the woodwork and cleared for a corner. From the corner keeper Stewart tipped a Ross header over the bar. Then Stewart had to rush from goal to dive at the feet of Ross just as he was about to strike. Moments later, Stewart was again in action saving a powerful Lister shot. Despite being down to ten men for most of the second half, the home side deserved credit for their hard work and endeavour, preventing Penicuik from adding to their half time lead.
