Penicuik kicked off at a bright and very windy Whitton Park and went ahead within the first minute
as a Patterson snapshot was only parried by Ross in the Broughty goal and McCALLUM was on
hand to force the ball home. Without creating any real chances the visitors controlled the first half
hour and it was 31 minutes before the home side created their first chance as Plenderleith headed
wide from a Cameron cross. Penicuik responded with a dangerous ball into the box from Ross
which was headed behind for a corner, which McDermott delivered across the six yard box but
sailed harmlessly out for a goal kick. McCallum attempted to break free with a clear sight of goal
after a mistake by Lunan, but his claims that he was impeded were waved away by referee McNab.
With 37 minutes on the clock Winter picked up a loose ball some 30 yards from the visitors goal and
unleashed a dipping volley which was well tipped over the bar by Bejaoui, as Broughty started to
get as grip of the game. Five minutes later a dangerous cross into the box by Plenderleith was
cleared off the line by Ross as the half time whistle saw Penicuik go in with a slender one nil lead.
Half Time - Broughty Athletic 0 Penicuik Athletic 1
The home side started the second half with a sense of purpose and determination and that was
rewarded with 51 minutes gone when FRASER was adjudged to have been tripped by McDermott
in the box and he slotted home the resultant penalty kick. Penicuik reacted with McCallum winning
a corner, which evaded everyone in the six yard box and went out for a goal kick. There was
controversy in the 55th minute as Kerr slid in to dispose Fraser and his 'pass' was collected by
Bejaoui, and referee McNab awarded Broughty an indirect fee kick some 16 yards out. Fortunately
for the visitors the free kick was deflected wide for a corner; however the home side took the lead
on the hour mark as BRASH rose above Ross to send a header into the back of the net. The home
side had clearly gained the upper hand and Winter again tested Bejaoui but the keeper was equal
to the task. In the 69th minute a ball from Fraser found Dignan in space behind Cunnison and as he
surged into the box he squared the ball for WINTER to slot home to put the home side 3-1 in front.
Penicuik tried to raise the tempo to get back in the game and grabbed a consolation in the 86th
minute when McCALLUM was on hand to shoot home from six yards out after Ross fumbled a Barr
shot. Despite five minutes of injury time the visitors couldn't find an equaliser and slumped to their
third league defeat of the season after a promising start to the game.
