The opening ten minutes were evenly balanced but the first chance fell to Penicuik when Montgomery set
up Patterson but his strike was sliced wide of the goal. Two minutes later Bonnyrigg’s McGachie brought
out a good save by Hill. In the 21st minute, Hill was again in action when he saved a deflected Grady
strike. Bonnyrigg took the lead one minute later when awarded a free kick that ROSEBURGH drilled past
Hill. Immediately afterwards, Patterson had a chance, but he didn’t quite connect with his effort that went
just wide of the target. Bonnyrigg doubled their lead when MANSON fired in an unstoppable shot into the
top corner of the net. Minutes later the lively Patterson got past his marker only to see Paternek pull off a
great save to deny the striker. In the 28th minute, some excellent passing and movement by Bonnyrigg
left the Penicuik defence in tatters and MANSON coolly hooked the ball into the net. In the 34th minute a
cross from the left wing to Penicuik’s back post was headed by Grady but the ball looped over Hill and hit
the top of the crossbar and away for a goal kick. Then Penicuik attacked down the right from where
Patterson laid the ball off the Knight. He struck a powerful goal bound shot but keeper Paternek brought
off a top drawer, one handed save. In the 40th minute, a fine run by Knight saw him get to the bye line
and send in a low hard cross into the six yard box, but Paternek was alert to the danger and dived down
low to smother the ball.
Half Time: Penicuik 0 Bonnyrigg 3
Penicuik rang the changes for the second half bringing on
their more experienced players and they immediately made
an impact when McPartlin broke through the Bonnyrigg
defence, but his shot curled just wide of the goal. In the 55th
minute, following a corner to Penicuik, Barr saw his strike go
a yard wide of the goal. In the 60th minute, Penicuik reduced
the deficit when KERR rose above the defence to bullet
home a header off a corner kick. Five minutes later, McPartlin
again burst through the Bonnyrigg defence, got round
Paternek but the keeper clipped McPartlin and referee
Duncan awarded a penalty kick. McCallum blasted the spot
kick past Paternek with style. Penicuik now had their tails up,
and minutes later a great ball into the heart of the Bonnyrigg
box caused real problems for the defence and they were
fortunate that McCallum’s effort went straight into the arms of Paternek. However, Bonnyrigg increased
their lead in the 70th minute when WHITE headed home from a corner kick. Minutes later, Manson drove
forward unchallenged but his effort was well saved by Hill low down to his right. At the other end,
Penicuik forced two consecutive corners, the second of which beat everyone and was cleared off the line.
Play then swung to the other end when the Penicuik defence was caught short, but fortunately for
Penicuik, the strike on goal was woefully wide of the target. In the 86th minute came the goal of the game
when Ross left his marker trailing, looked up and sent a thirty yard, pinpoint, diagonal pass to
McCALLUM. he controlled the ball on his chest and struck a volley from the corner of the penalty box
that left Paternek clawing fresh air as it hit the back of the net.
This game was a fitting tribute to Jeff Gray and the opening of the new floodlights.
