Penicuik travelled to Pumpherston for this League Cup match wondering if the game would be played and
only a late pitch inspection by referee Hanlon allowed the game to go ahead. In the opening thirty seconds,
Millar had two chances, the first was blocked and the second saved by keeper Reid. In the 5th minute, Swan
for Pumpherston set up Roy who turned quickly but sliced his shot wide of the goal. Immediately afterwards,
a McPartlin clearance was headed on by Roxburgh to Millar, but keeper Reid rushed from goal to deny the
big striker. Then Roxburgh had a chance on the right but good defending cleared the danger. In the 12th
minute, Roxburgh got round the back of the Pumpherston defence to lay the ball back to Millar whose strike
was blocked. The ball fell to Knight who saw the same result and the ball was booted clear. Penicuik were
relentlessly pressing the home side and the pressure finally told when ROXBURGH picked up a throw in, laid
the ball off and then smashed the return pass into the top corner of the net. Straight from the restart, Swan
cut in from the right wing along the edge of the penalty box, and was going nowhere when he was needlessly
fouled. From the free kick DRUMMOND expertly curled the ball over the defensive wall into Haldane's top
right hand corner of the net. In the 28th minute, a long throw in by Kerr caught out the Pumpherston defence,
but McPartlin's effort from a Millar lay off went well wide of the target. Penicuik had another chance shortly
afterwards when Roxburgh set up Knight but his strike was blocked for a corner.
Half Time: Pumpherston 1 Penicuik 1
Five minutes into the half, Pumpherston were awarded a penalty, but Haldane saved Roy's spot kick. Then
the ball was cleared up field to MILLAR who outpaced the Pumpherston defence and stroked the ball past
the advancing Reid to put Penicuik ahead. Two minutes later came the move and goal of the game when a
sublime passing interchange between Penicuik's young guns, Roxburgh and Knight saw ROXBURGH finish
it off in style, blasting the ball into the roof of the net. In the 59th minute, Penicuik sewed up the game when a
strike by Gay was well saved by Reid, but the ball fell to MILLAR who slotted home from close range. Two
minutes later, a net bound McPartlin shot was deflected past for a corner. Penicuik continued to dominate the
play, but seemed more content to pass the ball around rather than push for more goals until the 85th minute
when that man Roxburgh struck again. He attacked the Pumpherston defence on the left side, waltzed past
two defenders only to be pulled down in the box by keeper Reid. ROXBURGH competently converted the
spot kick to complete a well deserved hat trick.
