The opening ten minutes were evenly contested and in the 12th minute a neat move by Penicuik saw McDermott
lay the ball off to Montgomery. His cross was met first time by Killin but his effort went over the bar. Two minutes
later, following a throw in to Dalkeith, Linton shot for goal but the ball flashed inches over the bar. Immediately
afterwards, Penicuik attacked down the right where Barr passed to Killin who in turn laid the ball across to
Montgomery, but keeper Hay was alert to the danger and rushed from his line to smother the ball at the feet of
Montgomery. In the 20th minute Patterson came close with a strike that went narrowly past the post. At the other
end a dangerous McNaughton cross was headed past by Gay for a corner to Dalkeith. From the corner, the ball
ricocheted off Meikle at the front post for a second corner. This time the ball was crossed long but the strike on
goal went well wide of the target. Then a great pass by Gay picked out Killin who chested the ball down and just
as he was about to strike Hay rushed from his goal to smother the ball. Shortly afterwards, with Dalkeith pressed
back in their penalty box, Gay struck for goal, but sliced his shot wide of the upright. In the44th minute, a swift
move down the left saw KILLIN break past his marker and slot the ball past Hay at his near post to open the
scoring.
Half Time: Penicuik 1 Dalkeith 0
Four minutes into the half and Penicuik attacked up the left where Barr spotted Hay off his line and tried a lob.
With the keeper back peddling furiously the ball went over his head but dipped over the crossbar onto the roof of
the net. In the 57th minute a Gay free kick from just outside the penalty box beat the defensive wall but Hay was
well placed to save comfortably. Two minutes later a penetrating run down the left wing by Dalkeith saw Watters
get round the back of the Penicuik defence and his cut back was well struck from just inside the box. However a
last gasp tackle blocked his effort and the rebound to Fisher whose shot was also blocked and the ball was
thumped clear. Twenty minutes into the second half and Dalkeith were well on top as Penicuik withdrew their wide
players into a defensive roll leaving Killin to plough a loan furrow up front . This allowed Dalkeith to build from the
back and their passing was well up to the task whilst Penicuik seemed content to defend a slender 1-0 lead. The
visitor's lead up play could not be faulted, but their final ball in the last third of the pitch let them down. In the 75th
minute, Killin set Montgomery free, but his effort went wide of the target. The Penicuik defence held out as the
ninety minutes came and went, but three minutes into injury time, following a corner to Dalkeith, the Penicuik
defence failed to clear their lines and HAYNES pounced to stroke the ball past Bald for the equaliser. One minute
later, again, another defensive error allowed McNAUGHTON to blast home the winner for the visitors. Once again
Penicuik's defensive frailties cost them dear.
