Penicuik brought Sauchie's run of success to a halt at Penicuik Park with an excellent all round team performance that saw
every player play his part in defeating an undeniably strong and talented side. Sauchie were the first to threaten in the 6th
minute when a free kick on the left was punched clear by Bald to the edge of the box. The ball was crossed back in, but clever
defending by Meikle saw him duck to let the ball go out of play for a goal kick. Immediately afterwards, Penicuik attacked down
the left wing where Knight laid the ball off to Roxburgh. He cut across the box to set up Cunnison, but keeper Halliwell dived
low down to cut out the danger. Then in the 15th minute, a Barr cross was adjudged to have been handled and a penalty
awarded. BARR despatched the spot kick in style giving Halliwell no chance. Ten minutes later, O'Reilly saw his strike go just
wide of the post with Halliwell looking on anxiously. In the 31st minute, Carroll got past Cunnison and sent over a superb low
cross into the box, but Reid read the move and cut out the cross before Sauchie could take advantage. At the other end, neat
passing between McPartlin and Roxburgh set up Brigain and although Halliwell failed to hold his shot the danger was cleared.
In the 38th minute, a quickly taken Sauchie free kick caught out the home defence, but fortunately for Penicuik, the ball was
missed by everyone and it slid past the post for a goal kick. Three minutes later, Sauchie came close with a powerful strike
that flew a couple of yards wide of the target. Right on half time, Reid came to the rescue with a fine block to deny Burns.
Half Time: Penicuik 1 Sauchie 0
Seconds into the half and a rare error in the Penicuik defence required Bald to rush from his goal line to smother the ball at
Bell's feet preventing what seemed a certain goal. After enduring ten minutes of strong pressure by Sauchie, Penicuik broke
quickly through Knight who set up McPartlin, but his long range effort was comfortably saved by Halliwell. In the 58th minute, a
free kick to Penicuik was picked up by O'Reilly who turned quickly and shot for goal, but his effort went wide of the target. In
the 78th minute, Sauchie should have scored, when Caroll, on the left wing, cut back from the bye line and curled a cross over
the defence to Purdie, but he got too much on his header and it sailed over the bar. Then another sustained spell of pressure
saw the Penicuik defence give not an inch and substitute Cummings frustrated effort sailed high over the bar. Then two free
kicks to Sauchie just outside the penalty box were well defended Penicuik. The first of which was blocked by the defensive
wall and the second was struck high and wide of the goal. In the 86th minute, Penicuik had a great chance to put the game to
bed when O'Reilly got the better of Halliwell, but just as he was about to knock the ball into the empty net, the keeper
somehow managed to snatch the ball off the striker's toe.
