Penicuik took on Super League and odds on favourites Linlithgow Rose in the quarter final of the
East of Scotland Cup. Linlithgow, being the current holders of the cup, were looking for a victory
in their next step to retaining the trophy. However they were in for a shock as Penicuik matched
them in all aspects of the game and ran out worthy 3-2 winners much to the delight of the large
home crowd.
Penicuik set out their stall in the opening minute of the game, when Harvey turned his man and
whipped in a low cross along the six yard box but an outstretched boot deflected the ball away
from the danger area. Five minutes later, a long clearance from defence picked out HARVEY who left three defenders in his wake, and let fly from just
inside the box. His strike was blocked by Ward, but the rebound came back to him and he thumped the ball into the back of the net for the opener. Penicuik
looked confident, defended well and looked extremely sharp on the break. In the 22nd minute, another attack by Penicuik saw Harvey lay the ball off to Killin
who slid it into the path of Barr, but his strike was blocked. Killin picked up the loose ball and his curling chip went inches wide of the target. Three minutes
later, with everyone expecting a cross from the right wing, Barr fired in a great shot that hit the side netting at the junction of then post and crossbar.
Minutes later, Barr sent in a dangerous cross into the heart of the six yard box but keeper Pinkowski was well placed to cut out the danger. On the half
hour, Linlithgow broke down the left wing with their best move of the game, but Manson’s strike went a foot wide of the upright when it seemed easier to
score. The visitors were back on level terms two minutes later when Strickland set up COYNE who took his chance well and slotted the ball past Bald into
the far corner of the net. Then in the 34th minute all Penicuik’s hard work was undone when, in trying to defend a powerful cross, McKAY headed past his
own keeper for an own goal.
Half time: Penicuik 1 Linlithgow 2
Penicuik came at the Rose from the restart and earned a corner In the opening minute. McDermott’s corner kick to the back post was headed by McKay
but blocked on the line amidst loud claims for a hand ball, but the referee was unmoved. Penicuik continued to pile on the pressure and were rewarded in
the 48th minute. Barr showed delightful skills when he chipped the ball over the defence to pick out HARVEY who turned and volleyed the ball over keeper
Pinkowski into the top corner of the net. In the 52th minute, a corner to Penicuik saw the ball partially cleared to Meikle, but his strike flew high over the bar.
Two minutes later, Millar for Penicuik, who had been a thorn in the flesh of the Linlithgow defence throughout the game, almost broke through three
defenders, but the ball fell to substitute Brigain. However his strike went over the crossbar. In the 69th minute, Linlithgow attacked down the right wing and
Manson’s hard low cross was tipped away by Bald in goal. One minute later, a speculative long range effort was comfortably saved by Bald. Linlithgow
were gradually pinning Penicuik back in their own half, but all their efforts broke down in the last third of the pitch. Then in the 84th minute, Barr showed
delightful skills when he bamboozled two Linlithgow defenders with his ball skills and flicked the ball over the heads of the defence to pick out KILLIN. He
cut in to his right and coolly slotted the ball past Pinkowski into the bottom corner of the net for a deserved winner for Penicuik.
