After taking their exit at the semi final stage of the East of Scotland Cup, Penicuik, with home advantage, had the opportunity to win
through to the final of the Fife and Lothians Cup. Bo'ness, with one eye on their last league fixture against Tayport needing a point to
pip Hill o'Beath to the Super League title, had the incentive of facing arch rivals, Linlithgow Rose who are already in the final.
Bo'ness were quickly on their way and the Penicuik defence had to look lively but Shirra's early effort ballooned over the cross bar.
Penicuik had their work cut out to keep the dangerous Plenderleith and Walker at bay. Bo'ness had a strong shout for a penalty
turned down and McKay was tackled as he cleared the ball. Unfortunately, McKay had to leave the field injured. He was replaced by
Leighfield who took his place alongside Craig Meikle at the heart of the Penicuik back five which stood firm against the Super
League leaders. Bald was Penicuik's saviour as first he stopped Walker in his tracks and then denied Plenderleith with a superb
block when he looked odds on to score. Penicuik's best chance fell to Harvey when Meikle headed a cross from Gay back across the
goal but Harvey's header went past the wrong side of the post. McQueen in the visitor's defence was winning any high balls pumped
forward in Harvey's direction to create a stalemate as the first half drew to a close.
Half Time: Penicuik Athletic 0 v 0 Bo'ness United
Penicuik's best performers in the first half had all been in defence but as the game wore on Penicuik gained the upper hand,
although Bo'ness were still posing problems for the home rearguard. In the seventy second minute Bald did well to tip a long range
Plenderleith cross over the crossbar. The energetic Smith replaced Riley in Penicuik's midfield. Shortly afterwards another heavy
challenge saw Killen take no further part in the game and he was replaced by Miller, Penicuik's final substitute. Four minutes later
Penicuik were awarded a free kick just outside the box but Harvey could only crash his shot into the defensive wall and the chance
was gone. Penicuik kept up the momentum and Harvey cut the ball back into Barr's path but his shot went high over the bar. Smith's
strong running was giving a tiring Bo'ness defence problems and Snowdon conceded a corner without knowing where the ball was.
Another Smith cross was cleared before Bailey confidently held Smith's next effort. Gallagher put forward some dangerous balls and
Walker, his fellow full back also put in an impressive shift. With six minutes to go a fierce Plenderleith drive was headed out for a
corner kick before Fleming was booked for kicking the ball away after a free kick was awarded. With three minutes of the regulation
ninety remaining, Bailey pulled off a terrific save low down to his left from Harvey who had controlled a Gallagher free kick before
firing in his shot. Bo'ness replied right away with a snap shot which went past the post. This was the last chance before the ninety
minutes finished goal less.
Penicuik had failed to score in the course of both of their semi finals and now had their chance in the sudden death penalty shoot out
to put that right. However, Bailey flung himself to his right to block Penicuik's first penalty taken by Harvey. Fleming got the first goal
of the night for Bo'ness with a left foot shot. Bailey was Bo'ness hero again when he saved Brigain's penalty down to his left although
it again looked as if he advanced well off his goal line. Shirra confidently put Bo'ness two goals up. Barr then opened Penicuik's
account when Bailey was finally beaten. McFadyen drilled his penalty kick into the net to preserve Bo'ness's two goal advantage.
Smith then stepped up to score for Penicuik but it was to no avail as Snowdon finished Penicuik's bid for cup glory by netting the
visitor's fourth penalty.
Result: Penicuik Athletic 0 v 0 Bo'ness United. (Bo'ness won by four goals to two in the penalty shoot out)
