Penicuik made a few changes to the side with McKay, Barr, Millar and Killin dropping to the bench and the changes seemed to affect the flow of their play. The first chance fell to St Andrews in the 12th minute, when a quick turn and strike by Sutherland flew inches over the bar. At the other end, Smith laid the ball off to Walker who turned his man only to shoot straight into keeper Bennett’s hands. Then a Sutherland header had Clark looking on anxiously as the ball went just wide of his left hand post. In the 20th minute, Meikle twice mishit a clearance and the ball was lobbed high into the air at the back post where Clark just managed to tip the ball away for a corner kick. Seven minutes later, McInnes got the better of McDermott and fired off a powerful shot that saw Clark pull off an instinctive one handed save to tip the ball round the post. On the half hour, a quickly taken free kick caught out the Penicuik defence, but Clark was well placed to save the effort on goal. Right on half time, the best chance of the game fell to Penicuik. An excellent pass out of defence set Walker free and, with only keeper Bennett to beat, he dragged his shot inches wide of the far post. Harvey rushed in at the far post, but just failed to get his boot to the ball. Half Time: St Andrews 1 Penicuik 0 In the 52nd minute, a long throw in by St Andrews deceived everyone in the Penicuik penalty box and bounced inches past the upright. Six minutes later, a poor clearance by Dammer was picked up by substitute Barr who tried a long range from just inside the Saints half, but Bennett saved comfortably. Then a cross into the Penicuik box was attacked by keeper Clark. He collided with McKay who crashed into Sutherland resulting in loud claims for a penalty, but the referee was unmoved. In the 60th minute, following a corner to Penicuik, Harvey’s effort looped over the bar. One minute later St Andrews took the lead when Dignan got past his marker, and as Clark advanced from goal, he fired a low cross to the far side of the box leaving the keeper in no man’s land. MUSHIN from a tight angle at the back post slotted the ball into the empty net. In the 78th minute, Harvey got past two defenders on the bye line, but his cross low into the box was cut out by keeper Bennett with Hopkinson ready to pounce. Five minutes later, Harvey set up a strike by Gay, but his powerful effort flew just wide of the target. Into injury time and Hopkinson drove down the left wing and sent over a dangerous low cross, but again Bennett was alert to the danger and got down well to save. Not the most inspiring of games, and Penicuik were frustrated throughout the game with the home side constantly using the offside trap to stifle any Penicuik attacks.
