Penicuik were on the attack from the first whistle and in the 7^th minute a Cole cross was struck by Gay and deflected inches past the post for a corner. From the corner, the ball was partially cleared to Gay whose dangerous cross was headed over the bar by Boyle. Then in the 11^th minute with the Penicuik defence looking flat footed, DEVINE was allowed all the time in the world move across the edge of the penalty box and strike the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Three minutes later, a poor kick out by keeper Livie was picked up in midfield, and laid off to Kerr. He struck a fierce shot with his left foot and, with Livie rooted to the spot, the ball hit the top of the crossbar and away for a goal kick. Penicuik should have equalised shortly afterwards, when Killin fired in a low cross into the six yard box where Cole somehow managed to miss the target.

In the 21^st minute, Killin anticipated a pass back to Ferrie in goal. He got to the ball before the keeper but the ball went inches wide of the right hand post. At the other end, Devine should have done better when he scooped the ball high over the bar when it seemed easier to score. Then Penicuik came close when Killin had two shots blocked and cleared for a corner. In the 39^th minute North End doubled their lead when Devine played in McSKIMMING who fairly blasted the ball past Livie. In the 44^th minute, following a corner to Penicuik, Barr saw his header strike the defender on the line, hit the bar and then appeared to be handled by a Dundee defender before Foster blasted the ball high over the bar.

From the restart Penicuik piled on the pressure and forced four corners in a row but all to no avail. Then Gowans bravely headed a long range strike by Gay away for a corner. Two minutes later, a deep cross by Moonie to the back post was met a full stretch by Gay, but he couldn’t direct his strike on goal. In the 63^rd minute, following more Penicuik pressure, Montgomery saw his 30 yard drive dip narrowly over the bar. In Dundee’s first real attack of the second half, a cross from the left was headed home by WILLIAMSON who was unmarked at the back post. One minute later, Penicuik got a goal back when a free kick was headed into his own net by McSKIMMING.

In the 72^nd minute, there was a let off for Penicuik when a bad pass back was intercepted by McSkimming who got round Livie, but an awkward bounce saw the ball canon off his shin for a goal kick. Five minutes later, a Penicuik free kick was met by Foster, but his header landed on the top of the crossbar. Shortly afterwards, Penicuik lost the ball in the middle of the park, and with the Penicuik defence out of position, Dundee broke quickly with three players against Penicuik’s Foster. However, Foster stuck to the task well and managed to block the pass that would have no doubt ended in a goal for Dundee. Just before full time, a Barr strike was heading for the top corner of the net when keeper Ferrie got a hand to the ball to tip it over the bar.
