Newtongrange 3 Penicuik 1

Newtongrange had the better of the early exchanges and in the 5th minute, Roseburgh picked out Hutchison who volleyed the ball home only to be ruled offside. Then Barr had a deflected shot comfortably saved by Hill. Hill’s huge clearance beat the Penicuik defence, but Hutchison’s header went straight into the arms of Livie. Newtongrange deservedly to the lead in the 14th minute when WILSON headed home a free kick. Four minutes later Penicuik were back on level terms. Newtongrange failed to clear a Barr free kick and FOSTER was on hand to drill the ball home from six yards.

In the 22nd minute, Moonie had a chance from the edge of the box, but his shot went just wide of the target. Then in the 31st minute, a fine move by Newtongrange saw WILSON leave the Penicuik defence behind, round keeper Livie and score from an acute angle. Right on half time, from a corner kick, Foster rose above the Newtongrange defence only to see his header go straight to keeper Hill.

Half Time: Newtongrange 2 Penicuik 1

In the 57th minute, substitute Cole had a chance, but Hill was quick to rush out and dive at his feet to smother the ball. At the other end keeper Livie pulled off a great one handed save to deny Newtongrange. Four minutes later, Hutchison in acres of space picked out Wilson at the far post, but Livie was quick off his line to dive at his feet and deflect the ball off Wilson for a goal kick. From this point Penicuik totally dominated play without getting any reward, and in the 78th minute the Newtongrange goal was living a charmed life when three shots were desperately blocked.

One minute later, a great move by Penicuik saw Cole’s shot hit the crossbar, fall to Barr, but his shot was blocked on the line. At the other end, another long clearance found Thomson whose shot was well saved by Livie. Penicuik continued to pile on the pressure, and again the woodwork twice came to Newtongrange’s rescue. Into injury time and Penicuik were still pressing hard. Keeper Livie came up for a Penicuik corner kick and got his head to the ball, the partial clearance was driven on goal and blocked on the line. All the Penicuik players claimed that the ball was over the line, but referee Hogg ignored the claims and the ball was thumped upfield where ANDERSON ran the length of the Penicuik half to slot the ball into the empty net.
