Penicuik 3 Oakley United 2

Penicuik returned to league business after their exit from the Scottish Cup and immediately showed the right attitude when, in the opening minute, Montgomery tested the Oakley defence with a searching cross to the back post that was headed away, but the ball was quickly returned, and Cameron’s header was beaten out by Parkyn and cleared. In the 13th minute, Cameron finished another flowing Penicuik move with a diving header that went narrowly past the post. Then keeper Parkyn cut out a great run and cross by Montgomery. At the other end Ramage pulled off a great save from a shot by Celantano.

The game then fell into a period when each side cancelled one another out, with both teams failing to create any chances. However, in the 35th minute, Penicuik should have scored when Montgomery picked out Foster in the box, but he side footed the ball past the post. Two minutes later, Oakley had a chance from a free kick on the edge of the Penicuik box, but Ramage was well placed to save Lammie’s strike on goal. In the 43rd minute, Oakley broke through the midfield but Lammie dragged his shot well wide of the target.

Half Time: Penicuik 0 Oakley 0

The second half started off brightly and in the 52nd minute Penicuik deservedly took the lead. Montgomery, who was Penicuik’s most dangerous player in the first half, set up BARR who turned quickly and slotted the ball past the despairing dive by Parkyn. One minute later, a Montgomery shot was beaten out by Parkyn and, following a scramble in the six-yard box, referee Hamill blew for a free kick to Oakley to relieve the pressure. Then in the 60th minute, an excellent move by Penicuik, instigated by Barr, set MOONIE free and he curled his shot past Parkyn into the bottom right hand corner of the net. One minute later, K Connors saw his 30-yard drive skim Ramage’s right hand post.

Shortly afterwards, Montgomery skipped past his marker to send over another threatening cross, but this time Sinclair stuck out a boot to deflect the ball away for a corner. In the 65th minute, after a fine passing move, the ball fell to LAMMIE who scored with a tremendous 30 yard shot that flashed into the top corner of the net giving Ramage no chance. Oakley were lifted by the goal and started to pressurise Penicuik, but the home defence held out well. In the 82nd minute Penicuik restored their two-goal lead when substitute Jones picked out MOONIE who coolly slammed the ball into the net from 15 yards. In the 88th minute, following a corner kick, a hotly disputed goal was awarded by referee Hamill when he adjudged LAMMIE’s shot to have crossed the goal line. However it proved too little too late for Oakley and Penicuik ran out 3 – 2 winners.
