Arniston 0 Penicuik 2

Two minutes into the game and Arniston keeper Baillie’s hesitation allowed Moonie to get to the ball before him, but the striker’s effort was hooked over the bar. In the 7th minute, Arniston pressure resulted in four corner kicks, the last of which saw a header crash back off the Penicuik crossbar and cleared. At the other end, Baillie, under a challenge from Moonie, rose to cut out a dangerous Gallagher cross. Minutes later, Moonie was denied by a last gasp challenge by Cunnison. From the corner kick, Baillie dived bravely at the feet of Cameron to save. In the 15th minute, another Penicuik corner was headed goalwards by Meikle, but the ball was cleared off the line.

The breakthrough for Penicuik came in the 23rd minute, again from a corner kick, when FOSTER rose to head powerfully past Baillie. On the half hour, following real pressure by Penicuik inside the Arniston penalty box, Penicuik had four shots on goal desperately blocked and eventually cleared. Two minutes later, Arniston beat the offside trap and Howitt drove in on goal, but great back tracking by Meikle saw him put in an excellent tackle to block the strike on goal. Then Meikle was in the right place to deflect a powerful McIntosh shot for a corner. In the 41st minute, a lightning break by Penicuik saw Cameron cross the ball into the path of Moonie who just failed by inches to make contact. Then right on half time, Barr had a first time volley that went wide of the target.

Half time: Arniston 0 Penicuik 1

In the 56th minute, a great diagonal pass picked out the hard working Moonie. He took one touch and crossed the ball low and hard across the penalty box, but the shot by Barr was blocked for a corner kick. Shortly afterwards came the miss of the match when Moonie’s cross picked out the unmarked Cameron in the six yard box, but he somehow contrived to head the ball over the bar. Then Martin for Arniston waltzed past three Penicuik defenders only to strike the ball wide of goal. In the 75th minute, a long throw in by Moriarty was met first time by substitute Darling, but his shot went narrowly past the upright.

Five minutes later, an attack down the left wing by Penicuik culminated with a curling right foot shot by Cameron saved at the second attempt by Baillie. In the 86th minute, after a spell of pressure by Arniston, Penicuik broke up the left with Moonie. He beat Cunnison beautifully, but his probing cross into the penalty box was missed by everyone. Penicuik continued to control the game and in the 90th minute, Steel set Moonie free on the left and his pin point cross picked out substitute McDONALD. His first touch was excellent and he fairly rifled the ball past Baillie to seal the points for Penicuik.
