Carnoustie 0 Penicuik 2

With both keepers injured, manager Stuart McKean was forced to pull on the goalie’s jersey for Penicuik’s visit to Carnoustie. From the kick off, Carnoustie, with the strong wind behind them, went on the attack and only solid defending by Penicuik kept them at bay. Then in the 7th minute, Meikle lost possession to Conway, but fortunately for Penicuik, McKean comfortably saved his strike on goal. Two minutes later, Clark had a chance, but sliced his left foot shot wide of the upright. At the other end a neat one two between McDonald and Cameron saw Cameron’s lob go over the crossbar.

In the 13th minute, McKean did well to save a shot by Smith. Shortly afterwards, a misplaced pass by Gay was intercepted by Conway who sent over a cross to the back post where Clark just failed to make contact with the ball. In the 22nd minute a headed clearance by Lynch picked out Cameron surrounded by three defenders. He appeared to be impeded in the box but referee Beats waved play on. One minute later, following a corner to Penicuik, CAMERON rose at the front post to glance a header past McCafferty to put Penicuik ahead. In the 26th minute, Steel came close with header from a Montgomery corner kick. Ten minutes later, Cameron watched as his curling shot went inches past the post. Then Huhsin saw his strike go over the crossbar. In the 43rd minute, a corner to Penicuik was headed away, but fell to MILNE who volleyed the ball home from twenty five yards.

Half time: Carnoustie 0 Penicuik 2

In the opening seconds of the second half, Huhsin sent over a great cross that was headed goalwards by Collier, but McKean did exceptionally well to dive low to his right to save. One minute later, McKean pulled off another good save to deny Conway. Carnoustie were pulling out the stops to get the goal that would get them back into the game, but their final pass continued to let them down. Then a quick break by Penicuik almost caught the home side out, but McCafferty rushed from goal to deny Cameron. In the 58th minute, another lightning break by Penicuik saw McDonald get two bites at the cherry, but keeper McCafferty pulled off a great save to turn the ball round the post. Then, a neat move by Penicuik saw Lynch,  after being set up by McDonald, drag his shot wide of the post.

In the 66th minute, an excellent diagonal pass by Gallagher picked out Montgomery, but his powerful strike went over the bar. One minute later, McDonald had a shot well saved by McCafferty. The rebound fell to Ryrie, but the keeper brilliantly saved his strike. In the 74th minute, a ball over the Penicuik defence picked out Collier who ran in on goal with only McKean to beat, but after what seemed like an inordinate length of time, the referee blew for offside. Three minutes later, a corner to Carnoustie was headed back across goal to Collier, but his header sailed high over the bar. At the other end, McDonald got past his marker, but his cross into the box was too deep and the danger was cleared. In the 85th minute a Gay free kick was well saved by McCafferty. In Penicuik’s final attack, Montgomery saw his powerful shot take a deflection off a defender, but the ball went straight into the arms of McCafferty.
