PENICUIK ATHLETIC V COLDSTREAM

Pre season friendly at Penicuik Park

Saturday 25th July 2009.

Coldstream made their first visit to Penicuik Park as both teams continued their build up to the new season. Coldstream who finished ninth out of the twelve sides in the East of Scotland Premier division last season, with 28 points from 22 games were minus one or two of their regulars but were still able to field a strong team. Penicuik had quite a few new faces in the ranks keen to impress manager Snowie McKean.

Penicuik opened the scoring through RYAN GAY from the penalty spot with fifteen minutes gone when Lumsden felled Jamieson in the eighteen yard box. Lumsden was injured in the process and had to leave the field shortly afterwards. His replacement Mark Walters went on to have a fine match. Penicuik’s Kevin Milne also left the field injured before the end of the first half.

With fifteen minutes of the second half gone Coldstream’s trialist number nine equalised when the Penicuik defence failed to cut out free kick into the box from the right hand side. Off side was spoiling most of Coldstream’s efforts while Walters and his defence held firm against Penicuik’s attacks. However, with twenty minutes remaining NOON restored Penicuik’s lead when he was in the right place to side foot home after a terrific double save from Walters.

Coldstream applied the pressure as they searched for an equaliser but were unable to take advantage when Bald dropped a high ball with the home defence scrambling to clear. Bald was almost caught out again as he rushed from his goal line to cut out a through ball. Scott who reached the ball first failed to take advantage as his attempted lob went straight to a relieved Bald.

With ten minutes remaining, confusion reigned when it appeared that Penicuik had added a third goal. A Coleman effort bounced down from the underside of the bar and as the visitor’s defence frantically tried to clear the ball, Noon was on hand to head the ball into the net. Referee Mike Taylor appeared to award the goal but following appeals from the Coldstream defenders who pointed out that the ball was lying behind the goals checked that there was no gap in the goal net and pointed for a goal kick.

Coleman had a further chance for Penicuik when he was set up by Robertson but his powerful left foot effort sailed high over the bar.

Result: Penicuik Athletic 2 v 1 Coldstream
