Whitburn
were
the
visitors
to
Penicuik
Park
for
Cuikie’s
final
pre-season
friendly
before
the
League
campaign
kicks
off
next
Saturday
and
although
winning
the
game,
they
made
it
hard
for
themselves.
Penicuik
started
of
brightly
with
Joe
Viola
the
first
to
threaten
the
visitor’s
goal
when
he
cleverly
dummied
the
full
back,
raced
in
on
goal,
but
his
effort
hit
the
side
netting.
It
took
Whitburn
twenty
minutes
to
get
their
first
strike
on
goal
but
keeper
Swain
saved
easily.
Then
in
the
27th
minute,
Young
picked
out
Viola
in
midfield.
He
ran
directly
at
the
Whitburn
defence
and
his
neat
pass
set
up
TANSEY
who
knocked
the
ball
past
keeper
Russell
for
the
opening
goal.
Penicuik
doubled
their
lead
in
the
39th
minute
when
a
delightful
Caddow
chip
over
the
Whitburn
defence
picked
out
VIOLA
who
turned
his
marker
inside
out
and
slotted
home.
Half Time: Penicuik 2 Whitburn 0
Managers
Milne
and
Begg
made
six
changes
for
the
second
half
and
within
two
minutes
Whitburn
pulled
a
goal
back.
Substitute
Stevenson
lost
possession
in
his
own
half
and
LIDDELL
took
full
advantage
to
steer
the
ball
past
Swain
into
the
far
bottom
corner
of
the
net.
One
minute
later,
Penicuik
should
have
restored
their
two
goal
lead,
but
keeper
Russell
pulled
off
a
great
save
to
deny
Somerville.
However,
SOMERVILLE
made
amends
ten
minutes
later
when
he
pounced
at
the
back
post
to
tap
home
a
Baptie
cross.
Shortly
afterwards,
Somerville
almost
added
his
second,
but
his
first
time
strike
flashed
inches
past
the
post
with
Russell
rooted
to
the
spot.
In
the
65th
minute,
Somerville
was
set
free
but
again
Russell
denied
the
striker
with
an
excellent
save.
Then
in
the
69th
minute,
an
attempt
to
pass
the
ball
back
to
Swain
left
the
keeper
stranded
and
BRASS
pounced
to
lob
the
ball
over
Swain
into
the
empty
net.
Minutes
later
another
defensive
error
by
Penicuik
almost
cost
a
goal
but
Liddell,
as
he
rushed
in,
just
failed
to
get
his
head
to
the
cross.
In
the
89th
minute,
an
inch
perfect
Ponton
cross
picked
out
Somerville
but
again
Russell
saved
the
shot.
Then
it
was
Connolly
who
was
denied
by
Russell
with
another
great
save.
In
the
last
move
of
the
game
it
was
keeper
Swain
who
came
to
the
rescue
for
Penicuik with a superb one handed save.
