1st Round East of Scotland League Cup
Dalkeith 0 Penicuik 2 Dalkeith: McQueen, Murray, McQueenie, Fairnie, Cornell, McGlashan, Scott, McBeth, Wales, Devlin, Tansey Subs:  Mitchell, Grandison, Woodcock, Gay Penicuik: Watt, Stevenson, Baptie, Caddow, Williams, Sproule, Sampson, Crabbe, McIntosh, Jones (c), Ponton Subs: McCrory-Irving, Page, Cordery The game was evenly matched for the first quarter of an hour but the first chance fell to Penicuik when Stevenson cut the ball back from the goal line, but Sproule skyed his strike high over the bar. Two minutes later, a long range effort by the Jags went inches over the bar. In their next attack, a snap shot went narrowly wide of the upright. Dalkeith were looking the better side and in the 25th minute had the ball in the net but luckily for Penicuik the goal was ruled offside by the stand side assistant. On the half hour keeper McQueen was brought into action to deny McIntosh. Just before half time, following a corner to Dalkeith, a Tansy strike went just wide of the target. Half time: Dalkeith 0 Penicuik 0 Whatever was said to the Penicuik players at half time certainly did the trick because a different attitude was evident throughout the second half and the Dalkeith defence was under severe pressure. In the 59th minute, following a corner, Jones’s powerful header was blocked on the line and thumped clear. Two minutes later, McIntosh had a chance, but was again denied by keeper McQueen. In the 71st minute with Penicuik piling on the pressure, a low hard cross into the six yard box saw McQueen do well to get down and smother the ball. In Penicuik’s next attack, McCrory-Irving showed clever skill to leave two Jags players behind and set up Jones. He drove in on goal and unleashed a powerful strike that McQueen tipped on to the crossbar and the danger was cleared. Then a long ball from defence by Penicuik set Sampson free. He outpaced his marker, but he delayed his strike allowing McQueen to save. At the other end, a Tansey turn and strike was well covered by keeper Watt. Penicuik finally opened the scoring in the 81st minute when McIntosh laid the ball across the box where STEVENSON saw his shot blocked on the goal line, but he didn’t hesitate to stroke home the rebound for his first Penicuik goal. Seven minutes later, McIntosh again was the provider when he crossed the ball into the path of JONES who had the simple task of knocking the ball into the net from close range. Right on the 90th minute, a Dalkeith free kick took a wicked deflection and with Watt wrong footed, the ball was knocked over the bar at the back post. This was a game of two halves, with Dalkeith the better side in the opening forty five minutes, but Penicuik were totally dominant throughout the second half. Final Score: Dalkeith 0 Penicuik 2
