Penicuik travelled the short journey to New Victoria Park for this local derby against Newtongrange Star and the home
side earned an early corner that was headed clear to the edge of the box from where McNaughton blasted high over the
bar. Then keeper Allison was alert to cut out a dangerous cross into the penalty box. Shortly afterwards, Kateleza got
round the back of the home defence, but Jones’s first time strike flashed inches wide of the upright. However, in the 9th
minute, a driving run into the Star penalty box by Jones saw the midfielder taken down and a penalty awarded. Somerville
to the spot kick but Renton saved well. On the quarter hour, Young lost possession to Forster but his attempted lob was
easily gathered by Allison. Five minutes later, Kateleza raced in on goal but keeper Renton slid in to block the striker’s
shot. The follow up strike was again blocked and Katleza hooked the ball back into play but the defence thumped the ball
clear. In the 25th minute, Penicuik took the lead. MacDonald slipped a neat pass to Kateleza who cut the ball back from
the bye line and SOMERVILLE slotted home to make up for his penalty miss. Minutes later Star were awarded a free kick
on the edge of the box and former Penicuik player Scott curled the ball round the defensive wall but just wide of the goal.
At the other end a swift break by Penicuik set Kateleza free but he lost his footing at the vital moment and Renton was
able to clear the danger for a corner kick. In the 35th minute, Forbes curled a cross into the heart of the home penalty box
where Somerville rose to head for goal, but Renton was well placed to save.
Half Time: Newtongrange 0 Penicuik 1
In the opening seconds of the half, Ponton had a chance but his strike went straight keeper Renton. Minutes later, the
same player crossed the ball in again, this time to the back post where the unfortunate MELVIN, in an attempt to clear the
danger, knocked the ball into his own net. Penicuik were now controlling the game with some excellent possession
football when Somerville chested the ball down just outside the penalty box, but volleyed the ball over the bar. However
the striker was not to be denied, and on the hour mark SOMERVILLE drove in on goal to blast a 25 yard strike past
Renton the make it 0-3. In the 70th minute a long range effort by substitute Weston flew over the Penicuik crossbar. Five
minutes later, Penicuik’s new on loan signing from Livingston, Sampson had a chance to christen his debut with a goal,
but Renton rushed from goal to force the striker wide and the danger was cleared. Then a powerful strike by Weston was
beaten away by Allison and the return shot was turned round the post by the keeper for a corner to Newtongrange. The
Star were trying hard to get into the game by they were reduced to long range efforts that failed to trouble a solid Penicuik
defence. In the 86th minute, Newtongrange’s Mitchell received a straight red card for verbal abuse of referee Stewart.
The one man advantage to Penicuik only lasted a couple of minutes when Young limped off for Penicuik with all three
substitutes used.
