In the opening minute a McCrory-Irving free-kick was headed narrowly over the crossbar. In the 4th minute, a Scullion cross from the left wing went a begging.  Minutes later Ladeside's McKinnon went on a run down the left but his strike on goal went well wide of the target. Then a driving run by Ponton was thwarted by a last gasp tackle for a corner. In the 15th minute, a free kick just outside the Penicuik box was comfortably saved by Allison. Penicuik took the lead in the 16th minute when their free kick was headed back across the box and KATELEZA was in the right place to slot home.  One minute later Kilbirnie equalised when a Scullion free kick was glanced home by O'BYRNE. Immediately afterwards a Kateleza cross saw keeper Hughes brought into action to clear the danger. In the 25th minute, a long range strike by Barr was gathered at the second attempt by Hughes. Then a cross by Somerville from the right wing saw keeper Hughes nullify the danger with an excellent cut out under pressure. In the 32nd minute the home side had keeper Hughes to thank with an excellent block to deny McCrory-Irving. Two minutes later Penicuik should have taken the lead when a corner kick taken short created a great chance for Williams, but his header from inside the six yard box went wide of the keeper’s left hand post when it seemed easier to score. Five minutes later, Allison got low down to his right to save a Scullion free kick. Penicuik took the lead again in the 40th minute when a McCrory-Irving free kick was headed down by Kateleza and SOMERVILLE pounced to slot the ball home. Just before half time, danger man Scullion saw his curling free kick go just wide of the goal. Half time: Kilbirnie 1 Penicuik 2 Five minutes into the half and Kilbirnie had a great chance, but Findlay dragged his shot wide of the post. Then Kateleza got round the back of the home defence, cut the ball back across goal, but the strike on goal was blocked and cleared. Minutes later a powerful run by McGill culminated with a thunderous   25 yard strike that Allison tipped over the bar for a corner. At the other end Kateleza again got round the home defence, but Somerville’s strike went just wide of the goal. Then a driving run by Kateleza, despite two attempts to pull him down, set up Somerville, but he failed to take advantage. The referee then booked the culprits for their failed attempts to pull down the little striker. Shortly afterwards the home side got back on level terms when FINDLAY headed home a cross from the right wing. . Two minutes later, a diving header by substitute Jack Hamilton flashed past the upright.  Then Forbes broke from right back and laid the ball off to McCrory-Irving. He crossed the ball into the box to where Forbes had continued his run but his powerful shot was bravely headed away by O’Byrne. One minute later Penicuik should have taken the lead when Hughes blocked Hamilton’s shot and the rebound fell to Ponton, but his attempt went well wide of the target when it seemed easier to score. In the 72nd minute, Hamilton was set up by Kateleza, but his strike was gathered at the second attempt by Hughes. In Penicuik’s next attack, a Ponton cross struck the defenders arm but the referee ignored the claims for a penalty. In the 78th minute, Findlay rose above the Penicuik defence to get in a header, but his effort went straight into the arms of Allison. The home side must feel they survived to play another day and Penicuik must rue the chances they created but failed to convert. Final score: Kilbirnie 2 Penicuik 2
