The two teams met for the third time with Camelon holding the upper hand with a victory and a draw. However a quarter
final place in the DJ Laing East of Scotland Cup was at stake and only a piece of football magic by Kateleza saw Penicuik
progress. The game started brightly with a fourth minute free kick to Penicuik taken by Ponton, but keeper Shaw did well
to cut out the cross at the back post. Then Shaw again was in action to save a strike by Connolly. At the other end, an
excellent block by Hume cut out a dangerous low cross into the six yard box. Minutes later, MacDonald got round full back
Devlin but his low cross to the front post was cut out by Shaw as Somerville rushed in. In the 18th minute, a great chance
fell to Penicuik off a free kick. A strike on goal was blocked on the line and the rebound was deflected inches wide of the
upright for a corner. Ten minutes later, a clever ball over the top of the Penicuik defence set Duncan free, but his effort
went high and wide of the target. On the half hour, a swift break from defence by Penicuik saw Ponton cut the ball back to
Sampson at the edge of the box but his powerful strike went inches wide with keeper Shaw beaten. Then Hume broke
from defence, laid the ball off the MacDonald who curled the ball into the heart of the visitors’ defence. The ball fell to
Hume who had continued his run into the box, but his volley went high over the bar. In the 39th minute, Camelon’s
bustling striker, Sneddon, got off a shot that was slightly deflected, but Allison saved comfortably.
Half Time: Penicuik 0 Camelon 0
Five minutes into the half and Allison pulled off an excellent save to turn a Docherty shot round the post for a corner to
Camelon. One minute later, Penicuik came close with a shot that keeper Shaw blocked with his foot. In the 53rd minute
Camelon were reduced to ten men when Herron received a second yellow card and an early bath. His dismissal put his
team mates under pressure as Penicuik took full advantage of the extra man. Minutes later, Sampson was set up by
Forbes, but his effort flew high over the crossbar. In the 63rd minute, a quick break by Camelon opened up a chance for
Cameron but his shot went well wide of the target. One minute later, Ponton got past McCroary and crossed the ball to
the back post. Forbes was rushing in to make contact, but a brilliant piece of defending by Devlin saw him get his knee to
the ball and clear the danger. Immediately afterwards, Forbes saw his shot blocked and the rebound fell to Sampson but
his strike was deflected away for a corner. Then Ponton could not believe it when his net bound header was brilliantly
saved by Shaw. With the Penicuik pressure building, substitute Kateleza’s shot was deflected away for a corner but a goal
kick was given much to his disbelief. However the little striker was not to be denied and, following a throw in to Penicuik,
KATELEZA went on a dazzling run, leaving defenders in his wake to stroke the ball low past Shaw to get the winning
goal. However, from the restart, striker Sneddon saw Allison off his line and went for goal from the kick off. Allison was
back pedalling furiously to get his hand to the ball as he crashed into the woodwork and then gather the ball as it came
back off the crossbar. Penicuik continued to dominate play, and progressed to the quarter final against local rivals
Bonnyrigg Rose.
