After a magnificent effort by committee members and volunteers who battled to repair the pitch and ensure the game
went on, it was who Broxburn had the opening chance in the 5th minute. Anderson’s free kick from just outside the
penalty box flashed narrowly wide of the upright. However the visitors took the lead in the 8th minute. Zander MILLER
drove into the box and despite keeper Allison’s best effort, the ball nestled into the top corner of the net. Minutes later,
Miller again drove at the home defence but was stopped by a timely tackle by Young. On the quarter hour a misplaced
Broxburn pass was snapped up by Jamieson who turned quickly and let fly but his powerful shot hit the crossbar with
Wallace beaten. Five minutes later, the woodwork again came to the rescue for Broxburn when an excellent thirty yard
strike by MacDonald hit the junction of the bar and post. It was all one way traffic now with the visitors defending well and
relying on the occasional break from defence. However, a quickly taken free kick by Broxburn picked out Miller who
crossed the ball into the heart of the Penicuik defence but Richardson fluffed a great chance to double the lead. Then an
Anderson free kick was comfortably saved by Allison. At the other end, a cross by Williams to the back post was
misjudged by keeper Wallace and fell to Kateleza, but he rushed his shot and the ball went well wide of the goal. In the
38th minute, a great strike by Jones had keeper Wallace at full stretch to turn the ball away to safety. One minute later,
the same player had another chance, but his shot hit the side netting. Right on the half time whistle, Anderson
dispossessed Jamieson, burst through the midfield, only to see his shot go straight to keeper Allison.
Half Time: Penicuik 0 Broxburn 1
Five minutes into the half and a testing cross by Forbes into the Broxburn box was headed by Jamieson straight into the
arms of Wallace. In Penicuik’s next attack, a Ponton cross into the box saw MacDonald’s volley deflected narrowly past
the post for a corner. With Penicuik piling on the pressure, Jamieson had a chance but his effort was comfortably saved
by Wallace. In the 58th minute, a quick break by Broxburn almost resulted in a goal but the final strike was weak and
easily gathered by Allison. Then Penicuik’s Young was sent off when he received a second yellow card. Two minutes later,
another Forbes cross into the box was met by Jamieson, but again the keeper saved comfortably. In the 79th minute, a
Penicuik corner kick found Connolly at the edge of the box but his low driven shot flashed inches wide of the post. In the
83rd minute, Broxburn goal scorer Miller alson received a second yellow card and an early bath. The visitors were content
to defend their one goal lead and have the occasional break from defence and in the 90th minute such a break resulted in
a free kick just outside the penalty box. Anderson’s well struck free kick brought out the save of the match when Allison
tipped the ball over the bar. Just when everyone in the ground thought the game was over, in the 93rd minute, a corner to
Penicuik was partially cleared to the edge of the box where substitute HAMILTON drilled the ball low into the net off the
post for a thoroughly deserved equaliser.
