Beechwood Park survived an 8.30am pitch inspection and the game went ahead on a heavy pitch in stormy weather conditions. Ally Reid returned to Penicuik's defence after injury while Auchinleck made three changes from the side which had won their previous match in the Scottish FA Cup against Vale of Leithen. Park, Pettigrew and Gillies replaced White, McGoldrick and Slavin. Penicuik were hoping that the prospect of a visit to Tynecastle to play Hearts might distract the Scottish Junior Cup holders from the game in hand. However, this theory was quickly disproved with indeed, the exact opposite being the case with all of the Auchinleck players keen to show that they don't want to miss out on the biggest game in Auchinleck's history. Penicuik kicked off but Auchinleck laid siege on the Penicuik goal and Bald had a double save to make in the first minute from Pope's shot and Gillies effort to net the rebound. A minute later Bald was in action again to scramble the ball away and shortly afterwards was at full stretch to tip a Gillies shot over the bar. After this whirlwind start Roxburgh had Penicuik's first shot in the sixth minute but keeper Leishman who is attracting interest from senior clubs gathered comfortably. Four minutes later the lively Brigain sent a left foot shot over the bar. Both McPartlin and Draper were working hard on both flanks to carry the game to the home team. If Penicuik thought that they had weathered the early start they were mistaken as a Milliken left foot shot skimmed the crossbar. Penicuik's defence then conceded a corner which was not properly cleared. From the resulting corner, Milliken's effort was cleared off the line by McDermott. Penicuik won a free kick in a good position but Leishman punched Gay's effort clear sparking a quick counter attack. Bald saved Milliken's shot but despite Penicuik's claims for off side, GILLIES was on hand to knock home the rebound to give the home side the lead. Play was quite open with Penicuik trying to find their way back into the match. Draper had a good run and cross which was deflected into Leishman's hands and a McDermott free kick was cleared after Roxburgh was brought down. However, Penicuik were left reeling in the thirty fourth minute when a loose pass out of defence was pounced on by an eager Auchinleck pack and in trying to retrieve the situation, Gay was judged to have tripped Spence. GILLIES easily netted from the penalty spot. Penicuik were clearly rattled and a rampant Auchinleck went looking for more and were quickly rewarded. LATTA  scrambled the ball into the net at the post after another shot had deflected off Penicuik keeper Bald in the thirty sixth minute. Auchinleck continued to look dangerous and Bald had a good save after a ricochet sent Milliken clear. In the last act of the opening forty five minutes, Pettigrew shot high over the bar as the home team dominated. Half Time: Auchinleck Talbot 3 v 0 Penicuik Athletic Penicuik were unchanged at the break and in their first attack, Reid headed a McDermott free kick over the bar. At the other end Pope hit the ball high over the cross bar after picking up a Reid clearing header. With ten minutes gone Auchinleck added to their lead when an effort from GILLIES to complete his hat trick was judged to have crossed the line. A group of Penicuik players protested to both the referee and his assistant resulting in a yellow card for Cunnison. Harvey replaced McPartlin for Penicuik but it did not stop Auchinleck who notched their fifth goal in the sixty third minute when MILLIKEN finally got on the score sheet, hooking the ball home at the far post. Smith and Knight were now on for Penicuik but it was Auchinleck sub PATERSON who made an impact in seventy three minutes, slamming the ball home after a quick break down the right wing, to hit Penicuik for six. With five minutes remaining Reid headed a Gay corner past the post and Leishman had to look lively to save at Harvey's feet after the Penicuik man's penetrating run. In the last move of the game, Gillies shot over the bar from inside the six yard box as Bald hesitated. When the third round draw was made, it certainly looked as if Penicuik had been handed a difficult task and that is exactly how it turned out on the day.
