Tranent 2 Penicuik 1

Penicuik were eliminated from the Fife & Lothians Cup, losing 2-1 to Tranent Juniors in an entertaining cup-tie. The game started brightly with both sides evenly matched, but the first chance fell to Tranent when Paul Harvey swung and missed at a low, hard cross into the Penicuik penalty box, whereas any sort of contact would have directed the ball on target. In the 18th minute, Johnny Harvey set up McKenna at the edge of the box, but his shot clipped the base of the post and away for a goal kick. Three minutes later, Paul Harvey of Tranent saw his shot go narrowly wide of the target.

Then in the 22nd minute, Moonie was dispossessed just outside his own penalty box and in his anxiety to recover the ball, fouled McPartlin to give away a penalty. PAUL HARVEY converted the spot kick comfortably. However it took only four minutes for Penicuik to get back on level terms when MILLER slammed home from close range after Tranent failed to clear their lines. In the 35th minute, a flowing move through the midfield by Tranent required Bald to rush from goal and dive at the feet of Tate to deny him a goal scoring opportunity.

Half Time Tranent 1 Penicuik 1

Five minutes into the second half saw Miller and Johnny Harvey combine well, but Harvey’s strike just dipped over the crossbar. Then a long ball from defence was well held up by Miller and, with a neat back heel, set up Barr. He saw his shot beat the keeper, but go inches past the post. From the goal kick, the long ball caught out the Penicuik defence but Bald came to the rescue with a superb save off Graham. In Tranent’s next attack, substitute D Munro picked out McPartlin with a lovely diagonal pass, but everyone missed McPartlin’s low hard cross. In the 61st minute, a quick turn and shot by Paul Harvey flashed past the junction of the bar and post. Then at the other end, Miller and Johnny Harvey combined well again but keeper Inglis blocked Harvey’s shot. The rebound fell to Montgomery, but his shot wide just wide of the goal.

In the 63rd minute, Tranent regained the lead when a Paul Harvey shot was brilliantly save by Bald, but the rebound fell to TATE who had the easy task of slotting the ball into the empty net. Minutes later, Gay was inches away from heading home a Montgomery cross. In the 75th minute, a Walker free kick went inches over the Tranent crossbar. In Penicuik’s next attack, Inglis turned a powerful John Harvey shot over the bar. Then in the 85th minute, a great cross by Gay picked out Walker at the back post, but his header hit the base of the post and went past for a goal kick. Into injury time and keeper Inglis was well placed to save a Johnny Harvey free kick.
