Musselburgh 2 Penicuik 0

Penicuik started the game brightly and forced four corners in a row, but failed to capitalise on any of the dead ball situations. In the 10th minute, Bald was brought into action to pull off an excellent save from Chris King, turning his shot past the post for a corner kick. From the corner, the same player blasted the ball high over the bar. Immediately afterwards Penicuik attacked up the right and Noon’s cross was cut out by Mitchell under pressure from Kennedy for a corner, but the referee awarded a goal kick. On the half hour, Devlin tried a long-range shot for Musselburgh, but dragged it wide of the goal.

At the other end keeper Renton nipped a Penicuik free kick off Kennedy’s toe. One minute later, everyone missed a great ball across the Penicuik six-yard box by McKenna. The ball was then returned into the penalty box where Devlin only had to stroke the ball into the back of the net, but somehow managed to pull his effort past the post. In the 40th minute, a bit of magic by Chris King left his marker standing, but the pace of his low cross into the box beat everyone and the danger was cleared. Minutes later, Shand rose above the Penicuik defence, only to head Nelson’s corner kick high over the bar. The final move of the half saw Meikle get across the Musselburgh defence to head a Gay free kick narrowly past the post.

Half Time: Musselburgh 0 Penicuik 0

In the opening minute of the second half, King blasted a free kick over the Penicuik crossbar. Then in the 54th minute, an error by Gibb allowed himself to be dispossessed just outside his penalty area. MATTHEW KING, drove in on goal, rounded keeper Bald and slotted home from a tight angle. After getting over their disappointment at losing the goal. Penicuik worked their way back into the game and Robertson came close with a curling right foot shot that went inches wide of the target. In the 69th minute, Penicuik lost possession again in midfield, and again, Musselburgh punished the visitors when DEVLIN scored with a superb 30-yard strike. Two minutes later, another sweeping move by Musselburgh ended with Chris King shooting high over the bar.

In Musselburgh’s next attack, a high ball caught out the Penicuik defence and Docherty’s strike scraped past the upright. At the other end, substitute Jamieson was denied by Renton who rushed out of goal to gather the ball. In the 79th minute, a quickly taken free kick by Penicuik saw Cole cross the ball low to the front post. Robertson got a toe to the ball and Renton managed to block the shot but Mitchell was on hand to thump the ball away for a corner. In the 85th minute, Chris King out jumped Gallagher, but his header was wide of the target. In the 90th minute, Penicuik attacked up the right when Robertson’s pace left his marker behind. Keeper Renton flipped his low cross onto the crossbar, but the rebound fell behind Cole, who was waiting to pounce, and the danger was cleared.
