Ballingry Rovers: Davidson, McCreadie, Gray, Fotheringham, Bryce, Moffat, Graham, Adam, McGuire, Thomson, Stein. Subs: Ford, Connolly, McMillan, Spence, Byrne, McDonough, Gilfillan. Referee: Mr James Campbell. Both teams set out to play attacking football and with play flowing from end to end, the first incident of the game came in the 2nd minute when Bald was injured on the edge of the 18 yard box after a challenge by McGuire chasing a through ball. Penicuik conceded a free kick 20 yards out but Bald saved comfortably. A good opportunity was wasted when Riley won the ball in midfield and set up Hay travelling down the right but his 20 yard shot went disappointingly wide. Killin was denied the chance to put Penicuik ahead when a neat pass from Walker put him through with only keeper Davidson to beat but his shot came off the keeper’s leg and out for a throw in. Midway through the half, Ballingry started to come more into the game and kept Penicuik in their own half for longer periods during which time they wasted a good chance from a corner kick when a header went wide of Bald’s left hand post. Penicuik then conceded another free kick just outside the box which was easily saved by Bald. A long free kick from Bald was met by Killin but his net bound header was tipped over the bar and the resultant corner kick was easilly cleared by the away defence. Ballingry had another spell of possession in the Penicuik half when Graham resisted a McKay challenge 30 yards out on the left and raced towards goal but his left foot shot went harmlessly wide across the face of goal past Bald’s left hand post. This constant pressure resulted in a booking for Meikle in the 38th minute for persistent fouling. Ballingry’s pressure saw a good move coming to nothing when a ball across the face of goal was missed by everybody. Bald then had a good save from another corner kick. At the other end, Walker passed up a good chance to set up Barr but his poor pass put Ballingry once again in possession. Both sides were finding it difficult to create openings and scoring chances were very few as defences where on top and play was mainly confined to midfield. A poor first half by both sides ended after Robertson lost possession and conceded a foul which came to nothing. Half Time: Penicuik Athletic 0 Ballingry Rovers 0  The second half started with the same pattern as the first with both sides trying to create openings. In the 48th minute Gay forced a corner on the right after some good wing play and Barr was unlucky to see his 20 yard drive cleared. Riley and Kennedy were then booked within a minute of each other as Ballingry began to dominate play. Adam shot just over from the resultant free kick. Penicuik continued to put themselves under pressure with a series of poor passing out of defence although Barr did have a snap shot from 25 yards out on the left which went narrowly past. In the 58th minute, McCreadie was booked for fouling Killen as he broke from the left. Gay’s free kick resulted in a penalty appeal being denied by referee Campbell as he was unsighted on the opposite side of the penalty box. The next couple of minutes saw Riley replaced by Gallacher, Robertson booked after he lost possession in his own half by trying to dribble out of defence rather than pass inside to the unmarked Gallagher and Harvey then came on for Walker. Penicuik started to command more of the game after the substitutions and Harvey brought out a good save from Davidson when he shot from just outside the box. Another good move involving Gay, Killin and Harvey broke down in the box but the away keeper was kept busy with constant Penicuik pressure. Penicuik were dealt a blow in the 70th minute when, against the run of play, a speculative through ball managed to elude the Penicuik defence and the alert ADAM ran in from 18 yards and placed the ball past the advancing Bald. Penicuik continued to dominate although Ballingry did force the odd corner during this spell. Barr shot wide after good work by Harvey and Killen. Meikle had a good header cleared from a Gay corner. Penicuik just could not penetrate a strong Ballingry defence who were content to clear their lines at any cost. From yet another Penicuik corner in the 85th minute, the ball was cleared wide right on the half way line where Kennedy was caught for pace and received a second yellow card. With Penicuik down to 10 men, they continued to take the game to Ballingry and McDermott had a good run up the left and passed to Killin who was given offside in the 6 yard box. Harvey was then fouled 40 yards out and Barr’s resultant free kick was narrowly missed by Meikle and went behind for a goal kick. In the 90th minute, Adam picked up a loose ball, saw Bald off his line and tried a speculative shot at goal from 40 yards without success. Referee Campbell brought the game to a close after 3 minutes of added time. It was a disappointing result for Penicuik who should have got more out of this game particularly as they dominated most of the second half but they could not capitalise on the chances they created.
